T3UP - What is it?

what is the T3UP?

The T3UP is a set of extensions, scripts and templates based on bootstrap 4 or higher. As a TYPO3 integrator you can set up a website very quickly without having to go too deep into website development.

The T3UP is a best practise approach for universities, educational institutions etc. no matter, if you want to set up small or large websites. The package is based on TYPO3 10 or higher in combination with bootstrap 4 and beyond, with extensive setting options.

The package  serves as a foundation but it can and should be enhanced depending on your requirements.

beginning

when was the idea born for a university package?

It all started at the "World Café" during our first conference for universities in the German speaking TYPO3 world: the TYPO3 COOP in 2016.

Inspired by the regional group for universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg and the TYPO3 Camps in Germany, the h_da TYPO3 WebTeam took a decision in September 2015: Let´s organize a meeting for all universities (in Germany, Austria and Switzerland), who are using TYPO3 in their daily web development business!

TYPO3 COOP was born: September 20th-21st, 2016, the TYPO3 COOP was hosted at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt (nearby Frankfurt a.M.) with friendly support of dkd, in2code, jweiland and pluswerk AG as sponsors."

Next to many speeches and presentations on the first day, the second day offered a "World Café" which was organized by Patrick Lobacher (2016: pluswerk AG) and Ivonne Nordhausen (h_da). The goal of this event was to point out the needs and requirements of all people involved, all people from universities as well as from internet agencies.

The World Café was a funny and inspiring 90-minute event:

  • 14 tables, placed in two different rooms
  • each table had 1 moderator and 8 participants
  • 2 main moderators (Patrick and Magnus from pluswerk)
  • 7 questions in total
  • each table had 1 question to discuss

The World Café evaluation was presented in a huge conclusion plenum (moderated by Mathias Schreiber, TYPO3 GmbH and Patrick Lobacher) at the end of the day. After this final presentation we also set up working groups for the main topics like establishing a TYPO3-Committee, setting up a cooperation with the TYPO3 Assocation and TYPO3 GmbH, setting up better cooperations between universities etc.

idea

an idea grows up

Based on various discussions with integrators, developers and editors, the idea of a package with an easy installation routine was born.

As a first step, the T3AC (TYPO3 Academic Committee) created a list of extensions which are common in many University websites.

In addition to that, we evaluated the World Café and developed a road map for a new University package.

what happend during 2017?

Contents of the T3UP

At the same time the T3AC established a new membership in the TYPO3 Community: the TYPO3 Academic Membership (status levels: gold, silver, bronze).

And last but not least, T3AC decided to organize the next TYPO3 COOP with a new Name: T3UD (TYPO3 University Days). The goal of T3UD is a close cooperation between the Universities, the TYPO3 Association and the newly founded TYPO3 GmbH.

implementation

what happened after 2017?

A lot of work happend in the background, in T3AC-Meetings. We discussed things like:

  • Who is the target audience for the T3UP?
  • Who should have access to the package?
  • Is the package for free for everyone?
  • Who is the product owner?
  • Who is in charge of service & support?
  • etc.

In the past two years we developed a package with functions and extensions which are common in the university world. The T3UP is a package you can just install and, if needed, adapt for your university.
